WHAT IS A SOUNDSCAPE?

A soundscape is an audio environment created by sounds.  For example if you stood on the corner of a busy street the soundscape you'd hear would be made up of the cars driving past, perhaps the honking of a horn and the beeping of the crossing at the traffic lights.

WHAT IS SOUND DESIGN?

Sound design is the choosing, grabbing, editing and creating of sound elements used in theatre, films, TV, live shows, radio and video games.  At Auckland Theatre Company we use Sound Design for every theatre production.   Our lead artist Anonymouz was also the Sound Designer for MY OWN DARLING written by Grace Taylor.

SOUND DESIGN & SOUNDSCAPES

Anonymouz helped young people from Māngere create their own soundscapes.  Participants went to specific sites in the local area, and with portable recording equipment they recorded sounds on the ground (mud), in the sky (planes), in the bush (birds), in the playground (a flying fox), each other (laughing) and then they returned to a mobile studio where they recorded their own lyrics and music.

Press play to hear a sample of Mangere Central School's soundscape.  The sounds at the beginning is from a stick hitting a number 8 wire fence!
